The “World Horizons” mission movement
began with the prayers of one man, Rowland Evans, in
Wales, United Kingdom, in the 1970s. His aim was to
help the British evangelical churches to take a more
active part in world missions. We have always known
that these roots were nourished by the prayers for
world evangelisation prayed during the Welsh revival
of 1904. Llanelli, the home of World Horizons today,
was the centre of this revival.
Motivated by a desire to see British believers active
in world evangelisation, Rowland Evans, the founder
of the mission, dedicated himself to pray together
with a group of young people.
It is difficult to put an exact date on the start of World Horizons, it never
had an “official” beginning, nor did it have a name until later
on. It simply started to work as an extension of that group of praying young
people.
Rowland began to work on spreading his ideas, and
started taking small groups on short-term experiences
in neighbouring countries. These people, one after
another, began to feel a desire to join together with
him in the work. Soon the first workers were being
sent into France and North Africa, and a permanent
base was established for the work in Britain.
Although it started as a British mission, with the
aim of placing believers in active ministry on the
frontlines of world evangelisation, in time it expanded
to include other nations, and teams were formed in
other parts of the world.
Today World Horizons has more than (…) people
from all over the world working in more than (…)
countries. People who share the same vision and the
same prayer to see believers placed on the frontlines
of the unreached world for Christ. (Something that
started in the crowded sitting room of a terraced house
in Wales is now an organisation of more than (…)
full-time workers, and is getting more and more multinational
and multiethnic.)
World Horizons has a wide range of ministries from
European cities to deserts and jungles. We work together
with local and national churches, believers and ministries
wherever possible.
The history of World Horizons is not one of an explosion
of activity, nor the sudden apparition of a large organisation,
but the gradual growth of a movement and a vision.
And so it will continue, as long as men and women from
different nationalities seek to express their calling
to take Jesus Christ to the nations, and involve others
with them in this task. This is the essence and the
heart of the work, and the central focus of World Horizons.
Its history is that of people with a commitment to
serve God in bringing about his desire to see Jesus
Christ glorified among the least evangelised nations
on earth. Those who find their satisfaction in this
very thing, giving expression to the heart of God for
a lost world, will write its future history. |
