El sofware Samba orioginal y utilidades relacionadas fue crado por Andrew Tridgell. Samba ahora se desarrolla por el Samba Team como un proyecto Open Source similar al desarrollo del núcleo Linux.

Las págians man originales las escribió Karl Auer. Las fuentes de las páginas las convirtió al formato YODL format (otra pieza excelente de Open Source software, available en ftp://ftp.icce.rug.nl/pub/unix/) y actualizó para Samba 2.0 Jeremy Allison. La conversión a DocBook for para Samba 2.2 la realizó Gerald Carter. La convesión a DocBook XML 4.2 para Samba 3.0 es obra de Alexander Bokovoy.
